Top reviews from other countries. My initial view of this item was it was the greatest thing since sliced bread five star and I was getting up to five tits various feeding on the peanuts daily.

Sadly the item is less than squirrel proof , both at the bottom , but more particulalry at the top where the hanging frame is loosely held into the top of the unit by weak plastic lugs which are neither squirrel proof nor large corvid bird proof. The bottom needs to be attached more firmly and the top hanging bar needs a locking crossbar through the body of the feeder – to lock into the hanging bar on bothside.

Brilliant unit let down by weak engineering. It would not cost much more in manufacture to make this a winner. The mesh is the ideal size for the birds both to hang onto and feed but once the bottom or the top hanging mchanism are damaged the unit is next to useless. Well as others have reported the design of this product is seriously flawed. It took only 4 days for the squirrels to destroy the plastic lugs for the handle.

The feeder then falls to the ground. The guarantee is worthless as it excludes squirrel damage. I did purchase this product in the full knowledge that I would have to modify it. I have replaced the plastic lugs with steel bolts and nuts and used twisted wire fixed around the bolts to make loops for the handle wire to go through. I also put small cable ties above the lid to prevent it being lifted by any squirrels.

These can be slid up by humans for filling and then slid down again. This could have been a good product with metal lugs instead of plastic. Be prepared to modify this feeder if you have squirrels. Originally skeptical that they would be able to land on the feeder, 2 finches that visited the garden occasionally has now turned into a baby boom with 14 finches at one stage landing in the garden, with all of them making a beeline for the feeder.

I have a second one on the way to keep up with demand, for its size it’s great value for money. If you wanted to put a small perch on it, a barbarque skewer with the pointy end cut off goes through it if you shave it down a bit. Regularly I see twenty or more gorgeous little colourful birds queuing up and happily feeding. I knew they live nearby because I had glimpsed goldfinches around my ordinary bird feeders, but I realised that they are shy and would take some time to check this out and decide it’s ok.
